New ferry service from Bellingham, Washington to Whittier, Alaska

May, 2, 2011 -- For the first time, the Alaska Marine Highway System will run a route every other week from Bellingham, Wash., to Whittier, Alaska. Previously, ferries departing Bellingham only traveled as far north as Haines, Alaska.

The new route aboard the 499-passenger MV Kennicott will place travelers just 60 miles south of Anchorage, where they can then access Southcentral and Interior Alaska via highway or the Alaska Railroad. Another new addition to the Alaska Marine Highway summer schedule is weekly service to the community of Gustavus, being added to the schedule for the first time in the system’s history. Gustavus is the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve and adjacent to the Tongass National Forest. For more information, visit www.FerryAlaska.com.

This is great - if I can put my RV on that ferry and go straight from Washington to Whittier, Alaska then that will be our 2012 trip. Drove the Alcan Hwy in 2009 and now just want to get back to Alaska. Let's do it.

Jerry, better figure up the cost. We went to Hanes, AK last year and it was going to cost us more to take the 45 minute ferry run to Skagway with our RV then it would cost us to drive back up to Hanes Junction and head east. However, I agree with you. Lets go back to Alaska!!

I live in Alaska and have gone from Bellingham to Juneau on the ferry, then hopped on a ferry to Whittier from there.

We road the ferry with out 36' MH and toad in '08 from Haines to Prince Rupert with stop offs (a week each) at Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan for a cost of just over $2500 bucks. You can go to: http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/index.shtml
and I'm sure you can figure out the costs.

Be aware that they will not let you sleep or stay inside your RV once the ferry is underway. It may be desireable to get a private cabin unless you're one of the hardy types that camp on the deck.

Both the ferry and the Alaska Highway are must-sees. If you're only going once, do the highway in one direction and the ferry in the other. Unfortunately, the ferry cruises all night, so you will miss some scenery. If you''re taking the original ferry route, it may be possible to stop over and catch the next ferry, so you can see more in daylight

I asked about costs and a mid-May departure from the ferry folks. Here is my response from them. So in May the ferry would be departing Bellingham, Washington and sailing to Whittier, Alaska. The boat will depart May 12th at 6pm and arrive into Whittier on May 17th at 6am. The cost per person is $547.00 one way. The cost of the motorhome would come to $3,570.00 (34 feet). The stateroom would be $493.00 and that is for a two berth outside cabin with no facilities. On this boat the only cabins with facilities are the 4 berth cabins.
